FAQ's Functional Medicine FAQ's

Thyroid is a butterfly shaped gland placed at the base of our neck and any dysfunction in working of this gland causes thyroid disease.
The most basic difference between Hypothyroidism and Hyperthyroidism is that in hypothyroidism too less thyroid hormone is produced which is known as underactive thyroid and in hyperthyroidism too much thyroid hormone is produced which is known as overactive thyroid.
Thyroid can be caused by other diseases which hampers the working of thyroid like Thyroiditis, Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, Postpartum thyroiditis. Other than this,Iodine deficiency and non-functioning of thyroid gland ,Graves disease, nodules, excessive iodine can also be the reason for thyroid disease.
The symptoms of thyroid can be different according to your condition. If you have hyperthyroidism then you may experience weight loss, trouble in sleeping, vision problems, anxiety, irritability and nervousness.
But if you have hypothyroidism then you may experience weight gain, fatigue, having coarse or dry hair, having a hoarse voice, and heavy menstrual periods.
Yes, losing hair can be a symptom in Thyroid as prolonged and severe hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism can cause loss of hair.
You can know that you are suffering from Thyroid if there is a sudden weight gain or loss even if you are having a balanced diet. Moreover, sudden or fast heart pounding, nervousness, anxiety, sweating, changes in your periods can lead to you telling you that you have Thyroid.
In case of hypothyroidism, Thyroid replacement medication can be helpful in treating the condition. While in case of hyperthyroidism, surgery, radioactive iodine, Antithyroid drugs, Beta blockers can be used to treat the condition. As per functional perspective, the first step in treatment of thyroid disease is to find underlying cause of the problems which may be dysbiosis, deficiency of nutrients, poor lifestyle , poor management of stress or any other disease.so by removing and correcting underlying causes e.g balancing iodine in diet, having enough selenium, consuming Zinc rich diet, managing stress, prioritizing gut health, improving sleep patterns, looking into anti inflammatory supplements.fulfilling nutritional deficiencies can help a lot.
You go for a Thyroid test if you see some symptoms of thyroid disease or you see there are some bulges in your thyroid gland in a self examine
By bringing lifestyle and diet changes along with required supplementation.
A Thyroid diagnostic test is basically done by taking a blood test. The doctor will take blood from your arm and then send it to the laboratory for results. The levels of TSH, T4 and T3 are checked, also an Anti-thyroid test is done in order to find out whether you have Thyroid or not.
No, most of the doctors suggest that you should not do fasting before your thyroid test.
Yes, you should do exercise if you have Thyroid as it will help bring improvement in your current condition. You can do activities like cycling, water aerobics, jumping rope, stair climbing etc.
You should be very cautious about what you eat if you have Thyroid. You should avoid food items like fried food, cold drinks, excessive sugar, alcohol, caffeine, soy foods and food items belonging to the brassica family.
To self examine your thyroid you will need a mirror and a glass of water. First look at your thyroid gland which is located at the base of your neck around the collarbone. And then while drinking a glass of water see if there are any sort of bulges or protrusions. You will have to repeat it several times in order to make a clear statement. And if you have bulges then you must visit a doctor.
